What do you need to take?

ESSENTIALS FOR CAMP 5

• Insect repellent
• Personal Medications
• Toiletries
• Torch Light- HEADLAMP ADVISABLE
• Spare batteries
• Bedding (light blanket, sheet & towel)
• Pillow (inflatable) - optional
• Enough food for 3 days (supplies can be bought from the Cafe/Gallery at HQ providing stock last)
• Mosquito net (MUST be paid for at the Park Office upon check in and to be collected at Camp 5 with a voucher)
• Sandals for bathroom - optional
• Some cash (mini tuck shop)

ESSENTIALS FOR THE PINNACLES

• ABOVE AVERAGE FITNESS & EXCELLENT HEALTH
• A carry pack (waterproof is recommended) with 2 straps (a sling bag will be in the way and may obstruct your vision towards your feet.) You need both hand free at all times.
• Shoes with grip and flexible sole that allows your ankle to move (stiff soled mountain boots are not ideal). The Adidas kampong rubber shoes have been proven to be the best shoe for a wide spectrum of climbers. For sale in Mulu Gallery*
• Sufficient water – 3 LITRES MINIMUM (1 is left at the halfway point for you to use on the return journey)
• Light lunch and an energy snack.
• Headlamp in case you get caught in the dark.
• A rainproof garment, preferably not a poncho (the incline is so steep that shorter individuals step on their poncho’s) if you do use a poncho, cut/trim the lower part.
• A personal First Aid Kit
• Gloves to help you cope with the rope sections as well as the sharp rocks on the way down. For sale in Mulu Gallery*
• COMMON SENSE: Listen to your guide (abandon the climb when heavy rain falls and don’t get caught in the dark), listen to your body, stick to the cut-off times and focus on your foot placement ALWAYS. Keep re-hydrated. Do not stand too long at the view point – going down is tougher than going up!

THE PINNACLES IS A HIGH RISK ACTIVITY!

WHY?

1. The steep gradient - 2.4km ascending to 1200m above sea level. (Descending is more challenging than ascending and takes longer!)
2. Descending in the dark. (Very challenging during daylight – more so when dark)
3. Slippery surface & sharp rocks. (Some of the limestones literally cuts like a blade!)
4. Tiredness/unfit (you lose concentration where to place your feet)
5. Very difficult to rescue a totally immobilized person (even more so when dark)
6. Dehydration (drink & carry sufficient fluids)
7. Never climb alone.
8. RESCUES: The Park has rescue protocols in place but it is not free. Please check the indemnity form!
9. Please keep this in mind and adhere to your GUIDE’S advice. Your guide is your best safety device!

FLIGHT SCHEDULE: 

KUCHING – MULU - KUCHING

MIRI – MULU - MIRI

KOTA KINABALU – MULU – KOTA KINABALU

Day 1: This morning we depart on Mas Wings flight MH ETD3630 ETD 0920hrs to Mulu National Park. It takes about 30 mins flight. We then meet the guide and transfer to Benarat Lodge for check in. After lunch we proceed by van to Park HQ. Take the plank walk to visit DEER CAVE, one of the biggest cave passages in the world. Close to Deer Cave is LANG'S CAVE, small but beautifully decorated. In the evening we will wait at the entrance to Deer Cave, where thousands of bats emerge most evenings to hunt for insects over the forest. We then return late in the afternoon to Park HQ and transfer to Benarat Inn for dinner and overnight. (Lunch, Dinner)

Day 2: After breakfast we depart by longboat at 0830hrs to the source of the Clearwater River. We first stop at Batu Bungan Penan Settlement for a short excursion of the settlement. You are able to see the hand made handicraft like baskets, bangles, mats by the Penan tribe. From there we go by boat to visit WIND CAVE with unusual calcite formations, including the tall, slender stalagmites in King's Room. Just a few hundred meters upriver lies CLEARWATER CAVE where you have to climb 200 steps to the cave's main entrance; visit the Lady's Cave and the underground river. The pool at Clearwater Spring is a nice place to swim and picnic. After lunch we go by boat beyond Clearwater Cave. From Long Lutu, an easy 3 hrs walk through virgin forest bring us to a Park hut on the bank of the MELINAU RIVER where it leaves the MELINAU GORGE. We overnight at Camp 5 (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3: The limestone mountains of Mulu are bedecked with sharp needles: the biggest and best examples, "THE PINNACLES", are on the north end of GUNUNG API mountain. Early breakfast and this morning we climb over 1000m up the steep path to a viewpoint overlooking the Pinnacles (the steepest sections have aluminum ladders for safety). If the weather is good, the four hour climb will be rewarded with wide views over the forest to Brunei and the South China Sea. Return to Camp 5 for another overnight stay. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4: This morning we return on foot to Long Lutut and by boat down the Melinau River to Mulu airport for your flight. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Tips for the trip:  You need to bring along your raincoat, mosquito repellent, torchlight and good trekking shoes for the Show Caves. Also bring along your swimming suit if you wish to swim at the Clearwater Spring.
